Sheriff Steven Hinkley has worked for the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for over 30 years and is now the elected Sheriff. During his career Sheriff Hinkley has served in numerous areas that have included critical leadership roles, including patrol, corrections, court-transport security, detective bureau, supervision, policy development, training, major crime scene investigations, vehicular homicide investigations, grant writing, crime scene supervision, and development of operational procedures. As Sheriff, he prioritizes reducing crime, community partnerships, law enforcement agency collaboration and increasing the quality of life for all county residents.

 

The Sheriff’s Office employs over 190 sworn and civilian personnel, handling over 20,000 calls for service per year, serving a 700 square mile area with a population of 135,000. To save costs and provide excellent law enforcement services to other communities the Sheriff’s Office contracts with the City of Springfield and several townships and villages. Additionally, the Calhoun County Jail is the fifth-largest correctional facility in the State of Michigan.

 

Sheriff Hinkley attended Michigan State University, University of North Florida Police Technology & Management, Northwestern Center for Public Safety, Jackson & Lansing Community College. Sheriff Hinkley is an Adjunct Instructor for 28 years at Kellogg Community College (KCC) and Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) Police Academies.

 

As Sheriff, he serves on several local advisory committees, including the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority (CCCDA) as chair, Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission and serves on the local Mental Health Authority, Summit Pointe, Board of Directors.
