Sheriff Matt Leirstein began his distinguished law enforcement career with the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office in 2006, starting as an intern. A dedicated professional, Sheriff Leirstein is a graduate of North Central Michigan College, where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice. He further honed his skills at the Kirtland Regional Police Academy, graduating as a member of Class 23, where he notably served as the graduation speaker. In 2007, Sheriff Leirstein began his law enforcement journey as a professional Deputy Sheriff, and throughout his career, he has taken on various roles within the office, including uniformed law enforcement services, park patrol, and undercover narcotics work. His commitment and expertise led to his advancement through the ranks to positions such as Corporal, Detective Sergeant, and Undersheriff. Currently, Sheriff Leirstein is pursuing an advanced degree in Public Administration, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Outside of his professional life, Sheriff Leirstein has been happily married to his wife, Nikki, for 29 years. Together, they have raised three daughters, fostering a family grounded in values of service and community. Sheriff Leirstein’s dedication to both his career and family underscores his commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others.
