Sheriff Wil Yancer served in the US Army from 1976-79 as a Military Policeman and upon his honorable discharge, was hired by the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer.
In 1981, he attended the Delta College Police Academy and was promoted to Deputy Sheriff.
In 1990, Sheriff Yancer was transferred to the Detective Bureau. He worked on the Auto Theft Team and was assigned to a multi-jurisdictional Property Crimes Team. In 1998, he was promoted to Detective Sergeant and became the supervisor of the Detective Bureau.
In 2005, Sheriff Yancer was promoted to Lieutenant and supervised the Law Enforcement Division of the Sheriff’s Office. In December of 2007, he retired from the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office.
In January of 2008, Sheriff Yancer was hired as the Undersheriff of Missaukee County and was appointed Sheriff in December of 2019.
Sheriff Yancer has attended countless training and leadership development courses throughout his law enforcement career. He has received numerous awards including Officer of the Year twice from the Saginaw Exchange Club and Detective of the Year by the Police Officer’s Association of Michigan. He is the past coordinator of the Saginaw County Violent Crimes Task Force and Surveillance Team. He is also the past President of the Saginaw County Deputies Association and the County Law Enforcement Association.
Sheriff Yancer is a current working board member of multiple agencies in the Missaukee County area including Cadillac Area Crime Stoppers, the Traverse Narcotics Team (TNT), and the Northern Michigan Mutual Aide Group.
